WEFC Events

Join the WEFC to Ride for Real Food!

Come Ride for Real Food with us! We will be careening over hill and dale in the West End Food Co-op’s first ever Bike-a-Thon.  Destination: Matchbox Garden at the Kortright Centre.  By joining the Bike-a-Thon you will:

Bike made of vegetables
  • Raise money to open our non-profit local food store!
  • Enjoy a scenic ride through Toronto parks to Matchbox Garden farm/Kortright Centre for Conservation
  • Eat some great food, get a farm tour, visit the Kortright Centre

Matchbox Garden farm is a four-acre market garden at the Kortright Centre for Conservation in Vaughan. The one-way trip is about 25K and the optional roundtrip is, well, about twice that.  Matchbox Garden produces over 100 varieties of rare, heirloom and open pollinated vegetables, seed and seedlings and has been a fixture at our Farmers’ Market since we started. The Kortright Centre for Conservation is Ontario's premier environmental and renewable energy education and demonstration centre. for more information about the Bike-a-Thon check on our website  or email us.

Cannery expansion to aid producer-members
We are also proud to announce the start of our project to expand the cannery for small-scale value-added processing for our producer members. We will be launching a series of consultations with producer members on this project — let us know if you want to be involved!

Re: Toronto City food procurement policy
Tuesday at City Hall, the Government Management Committee voted in a tie to accept or dismiss the local food procurement policy as presented in a staff report.  The tie (not a loss) means it goes to Council's next meeting July 12 & 13 for decision.  If you think Toronto should have a buy-local policy, sign the Toronto Environmental Alliance's petition .  For more information, email "Darcy Higgins, Food Forward"

On the Air
Monday, July 4th rise with the birds and look for us on CityTV's Breakfast Television some time between 6 and 8:30!

This week at the Market

Our Market Manager says:  "Strawberries may only have a week or 2 left, but other berries, currants and cherries are just getting going.  Here come the peas - shelling, sugar snap, snow peas, and more.  It's BBQ season - check out the naturally raised and pastured meats at the market (healthier, tastier, better environmentally, ...), roast some early zucchini, or the last of the asparagus, have a salad with 10 different lettuces and greens in it - I love this time of year!!"

Talk to our farmers:  At Sorauren Market we have both farmers who have been growing organically and otherwise sustainably for decades and others who are doing so for their first year.  Some travel for over 2 hours each way to get to market (thank you!), while others pack a trailer full of veggies from a couple of neighbourhoods over and ride their bike to market.  Make sure to talk to our farmers' about where they grow, what they grow, and what methods they use.  They are all amazingly knowledgeable!  It's great to know where your food comes from and who it comes from!

The Market runs on Monday from 3-7 pm at Sourauren Park.

Community Groups at this week's Market:

  • James Partanen of PARC, one of our fabulous preserving and canning experts, will be doing a home canning demo at the community table (probably strawberry jam!!!)
  • Find out from Stop the Mega Quarry how to stop a huge quarry threatening prime farmland and significant sources of fresh water.  More info on this site and at www.ndact.com and www.citizensalliance.ca.  Also watch a short video.

Under the Market Music Canopy this week:

  • From 3 to 4:30 – special guests from Victoria, BC - Bible Belt Badlands - This duo packs a punch with a fun mix of garage rock, country, surf, folk, ...
  • From 5 to 6:30 – By popular demand Chris Patterson is back!  Super fun and interactive songs for kids and everyone else.

One-of-kind handbags sale to benefit the WEFC
We will have some beautiful handmade handbags from WEFC Board member Janna Lüttmann available at the Market’s Co-op table.  Proceeds to support the Co-op — many different sizes and shapes so come check them out!

See you at the Market on Monday!

At the Cannery
When it comes to canning, you can do anything with the WEFC!  Canning sessions have started and with great success.  Our strawberry jam workshop went very well and we will be doing one again on July 12th.  At the Community Supported Orchard (CSO)  next week participants will be learning how to can cherries and make cherry pie filling.  For those who live in the community, we have some good news!  We are starting to do canning workshops for community partners and other organisations.  If you're interested in learning about preserving, food security, or simply want to participate in a community event by attending any of our workshops, stop by the market and we'll be there!  Check out the WEFC Cannery Page for updates and recipes.  Feel free to email Katie as well.

Get Involved
There are many opportunities for volunteers at the WEFC -- you can sign up to join the volunteer pool, and tell us what you'd like to do.  To support your co-op financially you can donate online now.
