The Doors Will Open to Your Community Co-op!

It’s official! The West End Food Co-op is proud to announce that we have met our September 1st fund-raising target and will move ahead to open our Co-op space at the Parkdale Community Health Centre lower level by December 2011! We thank all of you who made this happen—members, volunteers, investors, supporters, partners, you are part of building a great community in Toronto’s west end.

We are still selling bonds (5 and ten year terms, 2.5% interest) as we have not fully funded the community kitchen yet; as a key part of the Co-op’s operations, we very much want to open with the kitchen operational. So buy a bond or two, and/ or come join the fun in West End Food Co-op’s historic first annual Bike-A-Thon to Matchbox Garden on September 25.

Our preparation of the space at Parkdale Community Health Centre includes a green retrofit with our partners the Fourth Pig Worker Co-op. If you are interested in helping out or attending some of the green building workshops please let us know at info@westendfood.coop or come by the Market and tell us your skills and interests!

Third! Co-op Annual General Meeting Scheduled October 18

Parkdale All Candidates Forum Announced

On Wednesday night we held our Focus Group to prepare for the All Candidates’ Forum on September 13. We generated lots of questions and ideas in the Tinto space despite the dire tornado warnings. The All Candidates Forum on September 13 is organized jointly by Parkdale Community Health Centre (PCHC), Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre and West End Food Co-op. It will be held at St. John’s Parish Hall starting at 6:30, moderated by Angela Robertson. PCHC’s AGM will precede the forum at 5:30.

This week at the Market

This week, come get your peaches because they are almost gone! Now is the time to start preserving and pickling. There will be plums, apples, cucumbers, beans. There are always many snacks, sweet treats, greens, sandwiches, breads and cheeses to enjoy at the Market.

Please let us know if you would like to volunteer with the market. We would love the help. Contact Corry and join a great group of people who help make the market happen each week.

Please help us save our farmers' markets!
Sign the petition to stop the current threat of huge fee increases for markets held in parks and other city property. Go to the Toronto Farmers’ Market Network website to learn more and to sign.

Community Groups at this week's Market:

  • Bike Pirates- Bring your bike down and get a safety check, plus Bike Pirates community mechanics will look it over, make small adjustments, and let you know what needs to be fixed or replaced.  Bike Pirates is a volunteer-run, non-profit, do-it-yourself workspace.
  • Silver Brush/ PARC: Silver Brush is a social enterprise based at PARC that specializes in painting and renovations. WEFc will be partnering with Silver Brush to offer natural plaster training and work opportunities for Silver Brush members and others during our “Building Our Green Co-op” project, the green retrofit this fall preparing the new store.  Please stop by their table and learn more about what they are doing and how you can become involved!

Under the Market Music Canopy this week

  • From 3:00 to 4:00 – Moyo Rainos Mutamba - Enjoy Mutamba’s sweet Mbira and traditional music from Zimbabwe
  • From 4.00-5.00–singer and guitarist Lisa Bozikovic

We are so fortunate to have had such wonderful musicians all summer sharing their talents with us at the market!

Last week's book sale was incredibly successful! Special thanks to  volunteers Johanna, Erin, Meghan, John, and especially to Marilyn (Corry’s mom!) who was visiting from Nova Scotia and helped at the table all day. Proceeds will go towards equipment for the market.

If you want to play music at the market or know someone you’d like to see play contact Corry and let her know!

At the Cannery

‘Tis the Season to Preserve

Can All You Can! Last Tuesday evening, we produced about 40 jars of mixed pickles in a lively canning workshop with the gardeners from Greenest City; some of the produce that went into the jars was from Greenest City’s own Hope garden! If you want to get involved, the harvest is abundant and this is a great time to put food by so you can have the luscious taste of summer in February; check out our website for future workshop dates.

Remember you can support our ability to do and teach preserving with our community partners for those who wouldn’t otherwise afford to do so at Small Change Fund.

You can also check out the WEFC Cannery Page for updates and recipes.  Feel free to email Katie with questions.
