WEFC News

What has the Co-op been up to? Busy, busy, busy!

We registered our first ten riders in the Bike-A-Thon, who are eligible to receive Greenbelt market bucks for the Farmers’ Market. We will have the list and the bucks at the next few markets, just come by to pick yours up! And please consider joining them to ride if you haven’t already or pledging one of our courageous Riders for Real Food —September 25 seems like a long way yet, but we need registrations and pledges now so we can plan well in advance.

We are launching the new Local Food for Local Tastes project—keep an eye out for new market bags, cannery aprons and new vendor profiles and stories so you can learn more about our marvelous vendors.

Thanks to Erin Shaw, our summer intern from York University, we are welcoming many producers as new members of the Co-op (welcome and thanks to all who joined recently) and interviewing each of them individually for input on an expanded cannery project for the farmer members. We are hearing great ideas on processing needs to build local food—including freezer capacity and dehydration, as well as the hot water bath canning we have been doing.

Also, SAVE the DATE! On September 13, PCHC is holding an All Candidates Forum jointly with the Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre and WEFC. We are holding Focus Groups to develop questions and issues to bring to the candidates with a focus on food security, housing and affordable health care. WEFC will be holding one the third week of August, details to follow.

Come visit the Co-op at the Market and other events around the neighborhood—we would love to hear from you!

This week at the Market

From our market manager - "Last week we ate well from market ingredients: Amazing peach cobbler, great home made beef burgers with a big slice of juicy tomato, fresh eggs (over easy), gooey grilled cheese, pancakes with fresh berries, great zucchinni bread,.... there was more, but I’m getting hungry and have to go make a snack!"

It’s the middle of summer and the market is the place to be! This is the time we wait for all winter, the time when our farmers' arrive to the market with baskets brimming with tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, beans, eggplant, kale, beets, potatoes, peaches, and the list continues.

Hang out, have a popsicle, listen to some Mbira music from Zimbabwe and later in the day Grady Kelneck will be singing and playing some folk music, join the Greenest City Youth Squad and make some fabric flower badges. Looks to be a great day. Come join us!

The Market runs on Monday from 3-7 pm in Sourauren Park - See you there!

Community Groups at this week's Market:
  • The Toronto Cyclist Union - is a membership-based organization that works "together with citizens, community groups, bike shops and the City towards the common goals of ensuring that cycling is a legitimate, accessible, and safe means of transportation".  Come learn about their innovative projects such as the Bicycle Service Station to the campaign for cyclists to send out Thank You! cards to motorists who treat them with respect.
  • Greenest City - is an award-winning charitable organization that grows local organic food, youth leaders and healthy, sustainable communities with a focus on Toronto’s Parkdale-High Park neighbourhood.  Come by the market this Monday and the Green Squad will help decorate your attire by making flower fabric badges!

Under the Market Music Canopy this week

  • From 3:00 to 5:00 – Moyo Rainos Mutamba - Enjoy Mutamba’s sweet meditative and healing music from Zimbabwe in the park! To hear some of his music check it out on myspace or sonicbids.

  • From 5.00-6.30 Grady Kelneck playing folk music.

If you want to play music at the market or know someone you’d like to see play contact Corry and let her know!

At the Cannery

Remember you can support our ability to do and teach preserving with our community partners for those who wouldn’t otherwise afford to do so at Small Change Fund.
Look for our next canning workshop coming soon. You can also check out the WEFC Cannery Page for updates and recipes.  Feel free to email Katie with questions.

Community Events and News

Many thanks to Sarah and John and the GO Project youth group that came to the market last week to lend a hand to all the vendors on a holiday weekend. What a really great group of young people! When asked what they liked most about the project they all said that they just enjoyed helping others. Yeah Go Youth! Hey everyone, Volunteer! You'll feel great!
