[TORONTO, ONTARIO, June 8, 2018 ]The West End Food Co-op (WEFC) announces the closure of its retail store and community kitchen in Parkdale. On July 31st, 2018, the West End Food Co-op store at 1229 Queen Street West will be closing their doors after almost six years of operation.
Over the past year and a half, staff and Board members have worked to find a new location for the retail store and community kitchen. This is due to its access to its current location ceasing in September 2018, as Parkdale Community Health Centre needs to use the space for its own programming. After exploring over 100 sites and seeking support from public officials and consultants, the Board of Directors determined that ceasing operations at 1229 Queen St W as of July 31, 2018 is necessary in the absence of an affordable space. The Sorauren Farmers’ Market, another of WEFC’s projects in Parkdale, will continue to operate.
The West End Food Co-op found the cost of commercial spaces anywhere in or near Parkdale to be prohibitively expensive. Additionally, the market for local and organic food has changed as has the landscape for grocery options in and near Parkdale.
In the next year, the Co-op’s Board of Directors will be in a position to focus on strategic visioning and operational development for the future of the organization.
Kira Kastner, chair of the West End Food Co-op board stated, “We are deeply saddened to announce the closure of some of our programs and services. We will continue to remain focused on our goals and maintain our commitment to our community through the Sorauren Farmers’ Market, while investigating new ways to address the gaps created by the dominant food system.”
WEFC members are invited to a Special Members Meeting on Wednesday, June 27th, 2018 at the Parkdale Public Library. The meeting will start promptly at 6:00 pm and will have an open Question and Answer period at the end.
